Public housing: Council flats for residents of Palmerston North

Palmerston North City Council has 108 flats for renting to the public.

Location of Public Housing

They are in three locations:

  • Rakaia Place (245 Ferguson Street)
  • Waiheke Court (91 Ferguson Street)
  • Achilles Court (23 Amesbury Street)

Apply for Public Housing

Call the Residential Property Officer on (06) 356 8199  to make an interview appointment.

  1. Bring a reference from a previous landlord to the interview appointment.
  2. Your application will be placed on a waiting list. We allocate vacant flats according to need and on consideration of who is on the waiting list.
  3. You will need to pay 2 weeks rent in advance and a bond equal to 3 weeks rent.

Conditions of occupying a Council flat

  1. Rents are set at market rates, reviewed once a year (in October), and usually increased in December.
  2. You pay rent fortnightly in advance. The Council enforces this rule strictly.
  3. The Council maintains the grounds and buildings. The tenant keeps the flat safe, clean and tidy.
